Kavalan Oloroso Sherry Oak is the recent bottling that the Taiwan distillery has created by diluting the Kavalan Solist Sherry Cask, winning many international awards, with the precious water coming from the snow springs of the mountains in the northeast of the island. The result is a distillate with an ABV of 46%, compared to 58.4% of the Solist.
The intense olfactory experience opens with dark fruit (plum stands out), to which slightly bitter and balsamic notes of rhubarb and a component of processed leather are soon added. The sweetness is marked and complex and recalls marzipan, differently from other expressions matured in Oloroso barrels, which often return a more marked dryness.
It is structured and dense—a blast of ripe cherries and intense spices. Alcohol appears very well integrated to support a remarkable dram without making it explosive—cocoa in the finale.
Very long. Again with notes of plum and marzipan, but also with a distinct leather component. Gradually less sweet, at times with the dried fruit more typical for Oloroso sherry barrels.
Kavalan Oloroso Sherry Oak is an intensely sherried whisky whose profile is of medium depth thanks to the aroma’s finish and quality. It is capable of providing an intense and long-lasting performance. The ABV, reduced up to 46% compared to the higher ABV Solist, makes it a drink with a simpler approach for every moment.
