Bunnahabhain is a Scottish distillery that is currently radically changing its production structure with a huge investment of over 10 million pounds. The property is owned by Distell, a multinational company in the beverage sector originating in South Africa.
The distillery has proposed numerous non-peated bottlings, far from the other producers on the island. The entire core range is without peat, apart from some selected and limited offerings.
Bunnahabhain 1989/2016 First Edition is a single cask, bottled at cask strength. Bunnahabhain has a wide tradition of barrels sold to other companies that often offer great whiskies. Distilled in 1989, this whisky was bottled for the First Edition series by Edition Spirits, Andrew and Scott Laing, sons of Stewart, creators of Douglas Laing and Hunter Laing.
intensity above medium, spicy and fruity notes are perceived. On one side yellow apple, pear and unripe banana, on the other side hints of white pepper, ginger and camphor. After a couple minutes, notes of pastry, butter and coconut emerge. Good complexity.
medium intensity, perfect correspondence with the nose. Spicy wood notes emerge, white pepper and coffee beans followed by fruit, again yellow apple, ripe banana and pear. A certain astringency is perceptible.
medium-long, balsamic notes of eucalyptus, white pepper and sapid hints. The fruity part is relegated to the background.
Like any well-aged whisky, for this Bunnahabhain 1989/2016 First Edition it is necessary to give it time to fully enjoy the experience. A Bunnahabhain without big surprises, yet solid and with perfect balance.
