Mount Gay Rum has released the fourth bottling in its Master Blender Collection, the Andean Oak Cask. The collection was started back in 2018, as a celebration of 300 years in producing rum. For the 2021 release, Master Blender Trudiann Branker, decided to use a non traditional wood for the cask. Andean Oak from the Colombian Andes was chosen. The rum used for this release is a single batch that was distilled in a double retort pot still (copper) style. The rum was first aged for 14 years in ex-bourbon casks, then the rum was transferred to the Andean Oak casks for an additional 11 months. These special oak casks were chosen since they give a spicy and smoky notes to the rum.
The Master Blender Collection Andean Oak Cask rum is bottled at 96 proof (48% ABV), and is non-chill-filtered. The 750-ml bottle has an MSRP of $195. The release is limited to 1,026 bottles in the USA, and 1.734 additional bottles worldwide. Bottles are available for purchase at the time of this article.
