The Ardnamurchan Rum Cask Release is a 2023 special release single malt Scotch. It has been fully matured in ex-rum casks, selected to complement the distillery’s peated and unpeated spirit styles. The casks used for this release previously held molasses-based rum, imparting a distinctive maturation profile shaped by the residual influence of tropical spirit. The spirit was distilled using a combination of peated and unpeated barley and matured entirely on-site at the distillery’s bonded warehouses.
The mineral, almost salty DNA of the distillery is mitigated by the sweetness and tropical fruit of the rum finish, adding demerara to the citrus zesty nature of the spirit. At moments the integration of the spirit with the invasive finish is not complete, with the sweetness of the rum little too evident.
The sip is more salty, and adds on top a nice intensity of lemon with some lemon stones as well. Better balanced and richer than the nose, with a carefully managed ABV, for an intense body.
Medium, again with a peaty/ashy/mineral mix and the return of some unbalanced sweet tropical fruit notes.
Ardnamurchan Rum Cask Release is a very particular release, which features a nice idea, mixing the salty DNA of the distillery with a sweet tropical fruit finish, but lacks time and age and this means little less integration than the desired one.
