Benriach produces a wide variety of malts and often experiments with the use of special barrels, both for the entire course of the aging, for final steps. The tasted spirit dates back to 2013. Other editions followed that are still available online.
at first, peat with a fruity hint, which is different from that found in other peated whiskys. The fruits are then more pronounced, banana and apricot, along with citrus (mainly lemon). Pipe tobacco and herbs are present as well. A vegetal sensation appears after a few minutes.
the mouth feel is spicy. Notes of cinnamon and white pepper are outlined, then continue on to peat. The fruity side, already felt on the nose, emerges slightly.
of medium persistence, it releases peat, licorice and citrus.
The Benriach 17 Septemdecim unleashes a rather unusual peat note, different from what is common for Islay products. In fact, it is less "coastal". It has a good balance, while the complexity is average.
