Bowmore Gold Reef is a single malt from the famous Islay distillery launched in 2014 together with "Black Rock" and "White Sands" for the travel retail market. This special bottling by Bowmore intends to show the most fruity soul of the distillery, still keeping the marine character.
There are two different main notes, peat and fruity, which are interplaying in the entrance of the nose, with a good integration; peat is mainly saline, yellow and tropical fruity notes (coconut and banana) are balanced and not too processed. The general sensations are of a mellow, buttery and elegant product. Maybe intensity is not the highest, due to the low ABV.
Peat is again the main aroma, even though the entrance is balanced and not too spicy, and tropical fruits are added soon after the smoky flavor starts to fade. Intensity is good, though a maybe not high enough ABV. Saline part is present but well balanced. Chocolate and salt crystals. Sweetness is more intense than during the olfactory part.
Medium duration, where finally peat is less dominant and a mineral character is more evident, again with tropical fruit of medium ripeness. Centered, at times rather elegant.
Bowmore Gold Reef is overall a good example of a successful marriage between peat and fruity character, with both main notes respected and integrated without one of them dominating over the other. The buttery texture of the distillery is present, though the low ABV provides an easy to drink, but mild experience. Well crafted for travel retail market.
