The Darroze Grands Assemblages 40 years old is an Armagnac belonging to the Grands Assemblages line, which includes a series of bottlings that are maturared for a very long period of time. The two “youngest” Armagnacs are an 8 and a 12 years old, followed by decades-old versions. Although the 40 years old may already seem to have an important ageing, the line also includes a 50 and a 6o years old. That said, 40 years is a period in which the wood if the barrel plays a fundamental role.
Immediately, the prolonged aging that this distillate has went through is perceptible. The flavor profile is deep and structured, with notes of orange peel and dark chocolate, followed by a hint of ripe, and almost tropical, fruits. Hints of dates emerge, then caramel and seasoned wood. It takes a few moments in the glass to release an intense note of rancio.
The rancio flavor is now in the foreground, followed by orange peel, intense wood spices and seasoned wood. There is also a note of honey. Then a touch of balsamic herbs (eucalyptus). The dark chocolate note is confirmed, but now it is a little less rich.
Medium-long persistence, with notes of rancio, wood, honey, and orange peel.
Overall, the Darroze Grands Assemblages 40 years old is an Armagnac with a great structured flavor profile. The harmony is remarkable and although the aromatic bouquet is particularly broad and deep, it is at the same time easy to appreciate. The aromatic intensity, considering the “only” 40% of ABV, is important. Round and satisfying, as well as elegant and powerful at the same time.
