Glenmorangie 14YO Quinta Ruban has been, together with Lasanta (finished in ex-sherry casks) and Nectar d'Or (finished in ex-Sauternes casks), one of the first whiskies launched on the market in the 2000's starting the trend of wine casks finish, still very popular today. This expression has reached the third release, as the first one was a NAS, while the second was a 12 years old.
Quite engaging. On the fruity side there are some nice bloody oranges, blackcurrant, plums. The winey character is evident yet very pleasant and balanced. Maybe a sugary crust on top of the fruit, of good quality. The spices are minor, maybe some vanilla pod.
Alcohol seems quite well integrated. The port finish is again very evident, yet the sensations are of an "upgraded" version of the sweet Portuguese wine, still loyal to the character, yet with some deep, dark fruity notes and Gianduia chocolate. Intense and creamy, fulfilling.
Medium duration, winey and sweet, yet balanced. Slightly dry in the final part.
Glenmorangie 14YO Quinta Ruban is a well crafted product, where the port wine character is preserved, yet extra fruity notes and very well integrated alcohol pushes the experience towards unexplored territories.
