Isle of Raasay Virgin Chinkapin Oak Single Cask 19/74

Isle of Raasay Virgin Chinkapin Oak Single Cask 19/74 is a Distillery Shop / UK Trade single cask release from the distillery. It is normally released every second year in peated and unpeated versions as part of the Na Sia series. Na Sia, meaning ‘The Six’ in Gaelic, represents the six casks single malt recipe. Two Isle of Raasay spirits – peated and unpeated – are matured separately in first fill Rye whiskey, fresh Chinkapin oak and first fill Bordeaux red wine casks. These six recipe casks are then married together for the standard release. For each cask type the distillery releases two single cask bottlings – one for the Sláinte Club and one for the Distillery Shop as part of the Na Sia Single Cask Series. Freshly charred and toasted, these custom made Chinkapin, or Quercus Muehlenbergii American white oak casks are a type of oak native to central and eastern North America.

TASTING NOTES - ISLE OF RAASAY VIRGIN CHINKAPIN OAK SINGLE CASK 19/74

Nose

Interesting. It keeps a rather "Raasay" characteristic profile of a certain acidity in the body, but it also delivers very intense Virgin Oak notes of ripe banana, flavorful vanilla, green apple. The sharpness of the spirit may also be due to the very high ABV, which is not completely silent, even though this can be understood at this "monstre" level. Only a very light buff of smoke.

Palate

Here the earthy peated character is more evident, only partially transformed by the yellow ripe fruit of the Virgin Oak, for a smoked Malaga ice-cream strange sensation, with some sharpness. Some tannins are also evident, despite a nice brown sugar second palate.

Finish

Medium duration, with some final astringency.

Isle of Raasay Virgin Chinkapin Oak Single Cask 19/74 is an interesting product, yet some sharpness from Raasay spirit are still evident, maybe also in conjunction with a very high ABV. The Chinkapin oak makes it quite interesting in terms of ripe yellow fruit, with intense apple and banana, and a boasting vanilla. A not completely successful exercise.
