Koval Rye Finished in Amburana Barrels is a limited-edition based on the same mash bill of 100% organic rye grain as the classic Koval Rye. This expression spent 6 months aging in Amburana casks before been bottled at 50% ABV. Amburana is a tall leguminous plant typical of South America, particularly Brazil, where it is often used for the aging of Cachaca.
Quite Christmas-forward, with pecans, light orange, cinnamon, gingerbread cookies, cotton candy.
Alcohol is rather well integrated, however the first impact in the mouth is rather peculiar and not totally captivating. After few minutes in the glass it improves quite a lot, and the pecans are coming out nicely, added to vanilla and cinnamon. It is definitely more complex and difficult to dissect than the nose, with some darker notes of tobacco. Unique.
Medium, back to the nose initial sweet spices.
Koval Rye Finished in Amburana Barrels is a rather strange experience: nose and finish are rather classical, with pecans and sweet spices, while the mouth feelings are peculiar and not totally centered, at times truly "off", and unknown for normal whisky lovers. A true innovation, which still requires some work to be fully enjoyable.
