The Laphroaig Four Oak is a bottling that was initially released as a duty-free exclusive. This is also the reason why the bottle contains 1 liter of distillate. The name of this whiskey derives from its aging, carried out through four different types of casks: ex bourbon, quarter cask [small 10 gallon / 45 liters cask], American virgin oak and European oak hogsheads.
At the first approach, the nose perceives aromas of peat, followed by medicinal herbs and a touch of vanilla. Subsequently there are also hints of very intense wood, followed by fruity notes.
On the palate it is expressed with notes of wood and vanilla, together with woody spices in the background. The fruits are also perceptible, even if not particularly structured. The peaty component is present, but it is not the protagonist.
Persistence is medium. The finish is focused on woody spices and hints of fruit, not without the presence of subtle peaty notes.
Overall, the Laphroaig Four Oaks is a decent Scotch whiskey, showing good harmony and excellent balance. However, it lacks in terms of structure and depth, which turn out to be the least performing characteristics.
