Macaloney Darach Braiche is one of the three initial releases from Macaloney's Caledonian Distillery, launched at the beginning of December 2020. Crowdfunded by Canadian single malt and beer enthusiasts, the craft distillery (and brewery) began production on the Pacific island of Vancouver Island in 2016. People involved in this project are Ex-Diageo Master Distiller Mike Nicolson, whisky expert Dr. Jim Swan and founder and fermentation expert Dr. Graeme Macaloney. The spirit is obtained from Canadian barley distilled in Forsyth's pot stills and matured in American and European oak in the island climate. The barley is said to be smoked at 54 ppm.
hints of sea and costal notes are immediately evident, with a salty and slightly balsamic peat. Lemon, not very sweet. On the bonfire on the beach also burn wooden logs, but the balsamic side and the lemon are much more intense.
well spiced and intense at the entrance, always very savory but with other spices emerging: pepper, cardamom, sometimes ginger thanks to a good freshness. Still lemon after a while, with a direct and not too round sweetness. At times it is tense and direct, less creamy than other products tested with similar profile.
medium, sapid and spicy, with the freshness of lemon.
Macaloney Darach Braiche is overall a product representing the more marine side of whisky, with balsamic hints of vegetable peat and pleasant and fresh notes of lemon. The profile is not really unique and reminds of several others peated products. However, there is a tense and clear profile, direct, less creamy and indulgent than other products, and this could have some admirers. At times very savory.
