MacNair's Lum Reek 12yo is the main release from Macnair's Boutique House of Spirits, released in cooperation with blender Billy Walker. Lum Reek whiskeys are crafted blending single malts from Islay and Speyside regions. The name takes inspiration from MacNair’s discovery of the delights of a whisky sip beside a smoky peat fireplace. In addition, a traditional Scottish toast to long life is: “Lang may yer lum reek” ("long may your chimney smoke"). Casks are aged in the GlenAllachie distillery.
The three woods used for aging are all quite evident here: the creamy side provided by the first fill bourbon casks, the PX chocolaty aspect and the winey tannins. Peat is also present, yet on a side. The global impression is maybe that the different souls are not 100% integrated together, but rather playing on their own.
A butterscotch rich sensation is maybe on the palate capable of re-assembling together the different aromas provided by the woods. Spices are still warm and sweet, not too evident (cedar wood, nutmeg, cinnamon).
Medium duration, probably the most pleasant of the aspects, again on rich, sweet-spiced butterscotch.
MacNair's Lum Reek 12yo is a nice product, centered on rich, sweet-spiced butterscotch. The aromas are very nice and varied, maybe lacking something in terms on integration. This aspect is much better on the palate and on the finish, which are making the experience very pleasant.
