Meikle Toir The Original is a release from 2023 which is using spirit distilled at the Glenallachie distillery under the super vision of revered Master Distiller Billy Walker. It is said to produce only 100'000 l of new make annually, with the intent to craft peated whisky in the Speyside, using premium mainland peat, the first time for this distillery and generally quite an unusual style for the geographical area.
Truly a gentle, oaky, yet persistent style of sweet peat. It is not ashy or marine, rather reminds of burning quality wood. The peat is just an extra layer on top of a solid core of butterscotch and honey, with a generous sprinkle of semi-sweet spices. Very nice.
Sweet, yet nicely balanced by the peat and spices. There is a nice, yet sweet dimension of demerara sugar, on top of which everything happens with a little more pungent peat and smoked almonds. A touch of ginger triggering salivation. Little more punchy than the nose.
Medium-short, clean, again with a sweet and oaky peat which is really the main distinct flavor.
Meikle Toir The Original is overall a nice exercise, with a characteristic and balanced oaky, sweet peat which is baked up by a solid butterscotch, honey, spices and ginger variety of aromas. The intensity is remarkable and the experience quite pleasant. Few more years will tell us if the genius of Billy Walker has found another way of making successful releases.
