The Mhoba Select Reserve French Cask is a rum made in South Africa from estate-grown sugarcane and distilled in pot stills built on-site. This expression is matured in French oak casks selected by the distillery. For aging, French oak barrels that had previously housed South African red wine were used. This tasting refers to the Batch No. 2023F01 Bottle 23 of 630.
To the nose, it offers rich sugarcane aromas alongside hints reminiscent of Jamaican-style rum. Notes of wood resin appear, followed by touches of charred oak.
To the palate, it is full-bodied, showcasing sugarcane, molasses, visou, candied fruits, and vegetal undertones. The alcohol is well integrated, though the 65% ABV remains noticeable.
The finish is medium-long and leans dry, with impressions of milk chocolate and wood.
