Miyagikyo Discovery Aromatic Yeast is a 2022 release from the Japanese distillery, belonging to the Discovery series, launched in 2021 for the 90th birthday of Nikka. It focused on special and unusual types of yeasts. The outturn has been of 4800 bottles.
Very fruity and open, with peach, sweet lemon, papaya. Fresh, yet with a sweaty character, such as fruit left for weeks out of fridge. It is then balanced by a wisp of smoke, maybe of distant bacon. A final impression of salted butter.
Velvety and mellow, yet with some level of warm entrance, all well balanced together. Again very fruity, even though the sweet spices contribution grows when compared to the nose, with vanilla and cinnamon. Some honey, not the sweetest.
Medium-short, clean yet with a touch of semi-sweet spices, with some classy fruit coming back. Again the image of slightly overripe papaya.
Miyagikyo Discovery Aromatic Yeast is overall a very pleasant release, with intense and open aromas, which are mainly fruity, with some side backgrounds hints of medium sweetness honey, sweet spices and a wisp of smoke. The main question is associated to the quality of the fruity dimension, which is very expressive, yet at moments slightly overripe, such as in the case of the papaya. Probably an interesting research in terms of yeasts, difficult to state if it will be repeated.
