Nikka Coffey Grain is a very popular and easy to find Japanese whiskey. This is a single great whiskey. The two “Coffey stills”, or two continuous stills, are used at the Miyagikyo distillery. These were imported from Scotland back in 1963.
It releases intense spicy hints of black pepper, followed by a mix of yellow fruit and berries, along with some cocoa nuances.
The rich spicy notes are the main aroma, even if they are intense compared to what is perceived on the nose. Then cherry and pineapple are released, soon enriched by a sugary note.
Long persistence. Notes of caramel, red fruit and spices are now perceptible.
Overall, Nikka Coffey Grain is a Japanese whiskey with a remarkable aromatic intensity. It is well balanced and has good complexity. It is a pleasant product, easy to appreciate. The price is not the best, as is the case with most whiskey produced in Japan.
