Nikka The Grain Whisky Discovery Series N.3 is the 2023 release belonging to the Discovery series. It features a blend of grain whiskies from four of the Asahi-owned brand’s distilleries: Miyagikyo, Nishinomiya, Moji, and Satsumatsukasa. The Discovery range is an exploration of Nikka’s production process and was created ahead of the brand’s 90th anniversary in 2024. This bottling marks the first time the brand has used grain distillates from shochu producers Moji Distillery and Satsumatsukasa Distillery. The new release uses a wide variety of grain whisky such as ‘specially reserved’ old Coffey grain and Coffey malt, and experimental new grain made from corn and rye. For this special release the label was designed with a four-row pattern to highlight each of the four distilleries. There are 20,000 bottles available worldwide.
Warm and deep, with dark cherries notes and vermouth. A minor polish hints brings to the second olfactory notes, which are slightly more oaky and on roasted nuts, on a vegetal character, of slightly bitter herbs. Nicely complex.
Clean, with nice black cherries compote and a minor rhubarb note, slightly bitter, yet very well balanced. Excellent ABV.
Medium-long, again on cherries and brown sugary notes. A minor resounding bitter note.
Nikka The Grain Whisky Discovery Series N.3 is a masterfully crafted blend of different grains, which is centered on a black cherry primary note, while different components are surrounding the main one, such as oak, nuts and slightly bitter rhubarb vegetal hints. It is warm and deep, with a rather long-lasting finish.
