Old Pulteney Coastal Series Port Cask is the 2023, second expression of the Coastal Series. The spirit from the Highland distillery based in Wick, has been matured in second fill bourbon barrells before being moved in both Ruby Port Pipes and Ruby Port Barriques, which once held an iconic sweet, red, fortified wine native to the Douro Valley of northern Portugal.
Very expressive right from the beginning. Alcohol is pretty present for a 46% ABV spirit. However, the sweet sugary notes of marzipan are quite intense as well, with very sweet plums and sultanas, vanilla of medium quality and sticky black&red fruit (black currant, overripe strawberries, dark cherries). The influence of port is quite evident.
The result is quite aggressive, very marked by port sweet taste over a briny character for a very unique, not fully integrated result. Salty caramel over red overripe fruit, again again the winey character come back. Alcoholic hints are also not helping.
Old Pulteney Coastal Series Port Cask is an interesting attempt of mixing together the coastal DNA mentioned in the title of the series, which is also quite representative of the distillery, with marking influence of port pipes. The result is quite unbalanced and funky at times, with elegance which remains as a distant dream, despite the intense and tasty sip.
