Rampur Double Cask is a Single Malt from the Indian distillery first released in 2019, part of the core range.
Very open and intense since the beginning. The sherry casks seem to be very active PX ones, as the nose is first giving off wet sultanas, strawberry and red plums, with a unleashed winey component.
The sip is more balanced and nuanced than the nose, with some nice bourbon-style yellow creamy fruit with tropical hints (overripe golden apples, mango, passion fruit). The sherried components are in the background, with soft peaches and a touch of wine spices. The caramel dimension is covered in sweet spices, rich and interesting.
At moments the fusion of creamy tropical fruit and sweet-savory spices of the sherried dimension are moving into balsamic, darker sensations, which are giving an extra level of depth.
Rampur Double Cask is overall a very interesting product. The nose is definitely favoring the ex-sherry casks, with a very intense, yet slightly mono-dimensional character. On the contrary, the palate is quite surprising for the accordance of ex-bourbon, ex-sherry and tropical fruit notes, with a symphony of flavors, with a deeper and richer finale of balsamic nature.
