Sasayaki Malt Whisky is a small batch release from the Bewa distillery in the Yamagata prefecture, near to the Bendai-Asahi national park in Japan. The spirit is aged for 3 years exclusively in Japanese Mizunara oak. The name refers to the Japanese word for "whispering" or "secret talk".
An open, good intensity core of plums, ripe peaches and sweet lemon is evident from the beginning, with silky and balanced sensations. There is a certain sophisticated hint, unclear between some uncommon spices (nutmeg, incense) and a more flowery component, such as in some classy dried flowers bouquets. Truly pleasant.
The sip proves to be slightly dry and woody, yet the nice components of the nose are replicated, with the sophisticated spiciness still evident and upfront. The overall sensations are warm and silky, a good balance between the low ABV and an evident classy palette of golden plums, baked lemons, apple tarte and a semi-sweet cinnamon and incense array of spices. A pinch of salt and, maybe, a distant trace of incense smoke.
Medium, quite unusual and complex, interesting for a 41% ABV product.
Sasayaki Malt Whisky is a very unique product, which makes a very good job in getting the distinctive traits of Mizunara oak in a classy yet very approachable product, which features a very good price point. Few bottles, worth tracking down.
