Starward Fortis is a whisky made exclusively from local Australian ingredients in Melbourne, using Australian malted barley and brewers’ yeast. Most of the wine barrels are said to come from Barossa Valley wineries, where they once held shiraz and cabernets; some of these barrels are charred, while most are leave untouched. This whisky won a Gold medal winner at San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2021.
Alcohol is very well integrated. Red and dark fruit of good depth, with blackberry, black currant, ripe strawberry and raisins. Very measured sweetness. The winey character is present but pleasant, even if at times the tannins are intense.
Full-bodied and round, alcohol almost not present. Good integration of dark fruit jam with a slightly drier size. The sweetness is sophisticated and never exaggerated, almost in the background. Dangerously drinkable. Only at times come hints of complex and rich spices.
Medium-long, of good refinement.
Starward Fortis is overall a very well made product, in which alcohol is very well managed, providing an intense drink in terms of aromas and flavors, but never broken down. The aromatic palette is of good level, not flattened, thanks to the sophisticated contribution of the ex shiraz and cabernet barrels.
