Teeling Sommelier Selection Rioja Wine is a 2025 release from the Irish distillery featuring the Small Batch whiskey (grain and malt whiskey initially fully aged in Ex-Bourbon barrels, then married together in Central American Rum casks for up to 12 months) further matured in Spanish Rioja ex-Red Wine casks.
This is less intense than expected. From one side it is nice to have a balanced wine casks finished release, from another the fragrant and Traminer-oriented notes of the Small Batch are not yet preserved. It is centered on light red fruit (unripe cherry compete), with minor caramel sweetness and a touch of spices which is also in the background. It definitely misses something.
Here there is a little more intense character, as well as some tannins coming from the wine. Spices are coming upfront, even darker at moments. Different from the nose and not truly coherent.
Short and slightly bitter, dry, again on light red fruit and a touch of spices.
Teeling Sommelier Selection Rioja Wine is a particular exercise of wine casks finish, not a truly clear one. From one side the Small Batch aromas are not easy to recognize, from the other perspective the red wines characteristics are quite different on the nose and on the palate. A puzzling release.
