The Gospel Straight Rye is made using 100% un-malted rye from a single farm in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia. The whiskey is double distilled and then aged for at least two years in heavily charred, new American oak barrels in Melbourne, Australia. Barrels are said to be sourced from a cooperage in Kentucky, USA, who obtain the oak from a single forest.
Very particular; the heavily charred barrels are working very hard to provide an intense vanilla and caramel character, reminding of some bourbons. However a pronounced rye bread and alluring oak resin notes are also quite evident. Two different souls live in here, reasonably well integrated together.
The rye is even more evident here; enveloped in quality caramel, the aromatic herbs and the spices punch are reaching immediately, with sweet pimento, cloves and pepper. ABV seems well designed.
Medium length, again on dark bread with aromatic herbs and a sweet caramel touch.
The Gospel Straight Rye is overall an interesting product, whose character pushes it in the very middle between bourbon and rye; the sweet components of vanilla and caramel are typical of heavily charred barrels, and the oaky component is somehow present (less than in average bourbons). However the aromatic herbs and a rich, varied spices palette are truly rye specificities. The overall experience is captivating and dynamic.
