Torabhaig Allt Gleann is a 2021 release from the second distillery based on the Isle of Skye, which started distilling in 2017. This is the second release overall from the distillery. Allt Gleann is the Gaelic for "old valley" and it takes its name from one of the two spring streams that feed the distillery. This single malt combines whiskies distilled between 2017 and 2018. Alongside Concerto barley, Laureate malt is also used, a variety that has almost completely replaced Concerto in production in subsequent years. The barley is peated to approximately 77 ppm, resulting in a spirit with 17 ppm residuals.
Delicate and extremely fresh, almost floral. The initial sensations are of fresh rain drops on grass, with a dense herbal smoke. The peat is not as intense as the ppm would let you think. Some level of saltiness and spices.
Here the peat provides a more intense salt-pepper mix, reminding sea water and dry seaweed. Despite the intentions of carefully selecting bonfire peat aromas rather than medicinale ones, the latter seem to be represented here, especially in the finale.
Medium-long duration, relatively peated and salty, again with medicinale hints.
Torabhaig Allt Gleann is a very clean release of a certain quality, with an intense peat which is however much less intense than the ppms. The maritime dimension is probably the best aspect, especially at the palate.
