Westward American Single Malt Pinot Noir Cask is a whisky produced in Oregon. It all starts with the Single Malt, aged in new, lightly charred American Oak barrels; the spirit is then given a finish of up to 2 years in Pinot Noir wine French oak casks. The whiskey collaboration was created in partnership with a handful of iconic Willamette Valley producers. Some of those include Bergstrom wines, Suzor Wines, and among a few others. This release had been initially limited to only the state of Oregon, but it is now sold nationwide.
Attractive; it starts with strawberry, blackberry, rose grapes. Just a touch of candied fruit. The vinous trait is present, yet well managed and quite pleasant. Some vanilla and oak in the background. Also sweetness is pretty much under control. Alcohol is just a caress.
Round and velvety, with a good sweetness balanced by an interesting spiciness (pepper and nutmeg), which is adding depth. The winey notes are crisp, with minor present tannins. It remains a juicy profile, almost of tart with strawberry jam and grapes of good quality.
Spicy and oaky, with strawberry jam and grapes compote.
Westward American Single Malt Pinot Noir Cask is overall an easy to drink product, whose enjoyable part insists on well-managed winey notes, strawberry tart, vanilla and oak. The freshness is good for a whisky with such a winey influences. Maybe the complexity is not very high and some notes of candied fruit on the nose reveal a short aging. The idea of keeping the alcoholic part not too high rewards the drink at the expense of a very intense experience. Pleasant.
