Yamazaki Islay Peated is a 2024 release part of the Tsukuriwake Selection, which explores the full potential of single malt whisky using a fusion of artisanship and experimentation informed by diverse whisky making techniques. Through the use of barley varieties rarely seen in Japanese whisky, aging techniques, unique wooden casks and peat and peated malts, Yamazaki's blenders have created four different expressions of Yamazaki and Hakushu single malts. Islay Peat is obtained smoking barley exclusively with peat from Islay.

TASTING NOTES - YAMAZAKI ISLAY PEATED

Nose

It is peated, yet the Yamazaki quality and malty characteristics are somehow present: the smoke is gentle and sweet, persistent, enveloping a toast of malt and dry biscuits, with vanilla inclinations. It is maybe the fruity component to be relegated in the background with yellow apples and unripe peaches. A little less complex and shiny when compared to the Golden Promise, yet very classy and elegant.

Palate

Very coherent with the nose, little more evident is the intensity of the peat, which keeps a smoky character and a very minor salty touch. A little "domestic" when compared to several Islay products.

Finish

Medium duration, here a touch of salt is more evident.

Yamazaki Yamazaki Islay Peated is a nice product, where complexity is helped by the sophisticated and classy smoke enveloping the malty, unripe fruit core of Yamazaki DNA. The only limit of this release is in the bipolar characters of Yamazaki and Islay, which could be seen as very different and very difficult to pair, especially in their best representations. A nice exercise, but a very high price for the dichotomy it expresses.
