Yamazaki 18yo Mizunara is a 2024 release part of the Tsukuriwake Selection, which explores the full potential of single malt whisky using a fusion of artisanship and experimentation informed by diverse whisky making techniques. Through the use of barley varieties rarely seen in Japanese whisky, aging techniques, unique wooden casks and peat and peated malts, Yamazaki's blenders have created four different expressions of Yamazaki and Hakushu single malts. The 18yo Mizunara release is an expression extensively aged in the famous Japanese wood casks.
These notes could be going on for pages and pages, due to the major complexity of the aromas palette. The first impressions are immediately of a very rich array of spices which are rare to be seen in whisky: incense, sandalwood, nutmeg, macis and many oriental spices, which are all mixed together and difficult to dissect and distinguish. Then some floral, very pleasant bouquet is given off, refined and natural. When going on in time, the spiciness becomes slightly drier and maybe even darker and smokier, without becoming peated. After this first layer, a solid fruity side boasts off ripe peaches and warm apricots, with minor hints of pinepple, without very ripe tropical sides, just very balanced hints. It is overall spicy and woody, without losing a core of freshness and sweetness of honey and quality vanilla. Unique.
Silky and velvety, providing the rich array of spices of the nose in a unique palatal experience, with a great body and texture, very creamy. Some butter biscuits, quality malt, custard. The fruit is more red, with some sweet and ripe cherries of great quality, reaching the jam. All the aspects are super balanced and rounded.
Very long despite the gentle quality of the aromas.
Yamazaki 18yo Mizunara is just a treasure of a whisky, capable of representing perfectly the wonders of this Japanese wood which, on top of classical yet refined and extremely well balanced aromas, is providing the spirit some unique spiciness reminding of distant lands.
