Meikle Toir The Sherry One is a release from 2023 which is using spirit distilled at the Glenallachie distillery under the super vision of revered Master Distiller Billy Walker. It is said to produce only 100'000 l of new make annually, with the intent to craft peated whisky in the Speyside, using premium mainland peat, the first time for this distillery and generally quite an unusual style for the geographical area.
Slightly less open and direct compared to the Original one. The characteristic sweet peat is there, however it is somehow blocked in a dense fig jam of sherried sensations, for an overall compact, heavy sensation. Orange peel and candied oranges. Quite wintery.
Again on the heavy side, like a thick chocolate bar with candied orange peel and sweet spices, which has been smoked by a chimney with quality peat logs. Again, looks like a nice dram in front of a fireplace, with snow outside.
Medium-long, dense, chewy, with some dark chocolate slightly bitter aftertaste. Interesting.
Meikle Toir The Sherry One is overall a good variation on the main theme of balanced, oaky, sweet peat which can be found in The Original. Though the intensity is remarkable, the experience is maybe slightly too winter-oriented, for a dense, chewy dram which sticks on the palate. We found the Original one to be more lively and ultimately more "original".
