The Balvenie 12yo Montilla Cask - A Collection of Curious Casks is a 2025 release from the Speyside distillery. This malt has spent its life in European oak casks seasoned with sweet wine from Montilla in Andalusia, Spain.
Rather than on intense sherried notes, this nose is clean and light, somehow fresh, though the core of butterscotch, caramel and vanilla is still present. The touch of sherry is modern and light, more grapefruit and unripe cherries than true red fruit compote.
Rather simple and straightforward, creamy, on the sweet side of candied sherry, though with good intensity and a perfect ABV. Spices are just a round and warm touch.
Medium duration, good quality and persistence.
The Balvenie 12yo Montilla Cask - A Collection of Curious Casks is another exercise on the extremely high quality core of the Balvenie malt. The only point is to find the real identity of this release, which is not a very long maturation, and the seasoned casks are not imparting the malt with very unique flavours. Not a bad product, however for sure not an unforgettable product.
