Depaz is a single-estate distillery located at the foot of Mount Pelée on the island of Martinique, one of the oldest and most storied production sites in the Caribbean. Founded in 1651 and rebuilt by Victor Depaz after the catastrophic 1902 volcanic eruption, the estate grows its own blue sugarcane on volcanic soils that the house regards as among the most sugar-rich on the island. The VSOP Réserve Spéciale is a blend of rhums vieux agricoles aged for a minimum of 7 years in small selected oak casks, well beyond the 4-year minimum typical of the VSOP category. It holds the AOC Martinique designation.
Caramel, milk chocolate and hazelnut open the nose, with a vegetal touch followe by a gentle spice lingers in the background.
Oily and enveloping. Wood spices emerge first, then give way to caramel, cocoa and leather. A hint of heat closes the progression, adding liveliness without breaking the balance.
Medium length. Honeyed and caramel-driven, with a toasted note that pleasantly extends the sip.
