Ardbeg Kelpie is a new yearly product from Ardbeg. It is a No Age Statement, aged in Virgin Black Sea Oak Casks. Not their usual procedure, but it should guaranty more intense flavors.
very marine and distinctly true to Ardbeg. First of all, notes of peat are perceptible, that aren't excessive or too accentuated and leave room to spicy black pepper notes. Also present are cocoa, fruits and citrus (lemon in particular). Notes of smoked bacon complete the aromatic palette.
it distances itself from the notes perceived on the nose and doesn't result particularly integrated. An accentuated alcoholic note is present, although the spirit doesn't present a particularly elevated gradation. The peaty notes are still perceptible, but result feeble and very contained; they are accompanied by light citrus notes and hints of cereal.
of medium persistency. Notes of peat, black pepper and bacon are reveals. The aromatic bouquet is completed by licorice. Phenols are perceptible as well.
A scotch whisky from which we expected a little something more. The base balance is missing and the sensation on the nose and on the palate have nothing in common: it result, in fact, quite interesting on the nose, faceted and intense, while on the palate the Kelpie lacks in depth. All this translates to a product that isn't well amalgamated.
