Arran 11yo Barrel Bonfire is the second of planned four releases belonging to the Signature Series, a selection of Arran Single Malts which showcases the diversity of their spirit. It features four unique bottlings specially chosen by Lochranza Distillery Manager Stewart Bowman and given his seal of approval. The peat level of this bottling sits at 42ppm. The Quarter Casks used in this bottling were sourced from a small distillery in Chicago – Koval - who use custom built 115 liters casks to mature their Bourbon before they arrive in Lochranza. The whisky in this bottling was originally filled into Bourbon Barrels in 2012. It was matured for nearly 5 and a half years, before being transferred into the Koval Quarter Casks in September 2018, where it spent the remaining 5 and a half years of its maturation time.
Delightful balance between sophisticated sweetness of quality vanilla, creme brulee, custard, butter biscuits, and an intense, dry, almost quenched fire peat, smoky yet cold and flavorful. A very distant floral hint, a citrus minor addition and some nuts dryness, for a sophisticated, excellent nose.
The peat here is a true peppery punch, intense and toasted, yet flavorful and balanced, however present and intense. Ashtray, cold bonfires, charred lemons, some herbs, with again a long lasting lemon citrus aspects. The sweetness is present, however more on the background when compared to nose, again with toasted oak.
Medium-long, ashy and rich in charcoal, again cold and dry at moments. Still sophisticated.
Arran 11yo Barrel Bonfire is a great release from Arran, which is capable of delivering an intensely peated experience with a sophisticated array of flavors. Balanced and surprising. It was listed in the AWARDS TOP10 whisky of 2024 (3rd place).
