Dream Whisky Creative Blend #1 is an experiment by Dream Whisky, the recent brand owned by Marco Maltagliati and Federico Mazzieri. The spirit is a true vatting of five different casks, again from closed Death’s Door distillery, including column-distilled bourbon, rye, classic single malt and a brewer malt whiskey, obtained by blending pot still and column-distilled grain. The spirit has been aged in casks that contained Heaven Hill bourbon. The label features a clown based on the portrait of George Washington taken from a dollar note. This bottling has been created in cooperation with Jerry Thomas Project.
Cotton candy and corn sweetness is the first impression, followed by an unripe yellow / citric fruit, grapefruit. It even reached some lemon/grapefruit zest intensity, with a blast of balsamic forest hints. A very minor, well balanced and integrated varnish note. Not the most complex, yet pleasant fresh nose.
The ABV seems very well chosen, for a rather intense, yet balanced final product. It is for sure sweet, with the experience split into two main parts: there is a citric/gingery fresh dimension, which stimulates salivation, while the background seems more malty, with even a dark component that step by step moves into a bitter taste, between coffee and licorice. Interesting, but not totally refined.
Medium duration, with some gingery persistence and cotton candy sweetness. Maybe slightly mono-dimensional here.
Dream Whisky Creative Blend #1 is an interesting experiment. At moments (nose, some aspects of the palate) the result is quite intriguing, for sure more complex than a standard American bourbon. At moments there are some aspects that are not totally convincing, such as the almost bitter note at the end of the palatal experience. Controversial and funny.
