George Dickel Hand Selected Barrel 9 Years Tennessee Whisky is a whiskey from George Dickel's private program, which bottles individual barrels aged either 9 or 14 years. Each bottle is hand-labeled and signed by George Dickel's master distiller. The sour mash uses the Lincoln County Process, which is the carbon filter typical of Tennessee whiskey. Forty years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, George A. Dickel was born in a rural town in East Tennessee. In 1867, Dickel was an established Nashville merchant, but moved his family to the town of Tullahoma (located in south-central Tennessee), where he purchased the Cascade Hollow Distillery. After working tirelessly at the distillery, Dickel declared that his spirits were of equal quality to the best scotch and followed the Scottish tradition of writing whisky without an "e". While the George A. Dickel Distillery was forced to close its doors due to Prohibition, it was rebuilt in 1958 by Master Distiller Ralph Dupps. To ensure the authenticity of the whiskey, Dupps obtained the original manuscripts in which Dickel detailed his unique recipe and distillation processes. Today, master blender and distillery manager Nicole Austin carries on the tradition of excellence that has made Dickel whiskey a symbol of quality for over a century.
Initially rather closed, it opens later with notes of acidic and fresh pineapple, not too ripe pear, hints of lemon. Intense and simple vanilla. Traces of roasting and pecan.
Intense and spicy entrance, with alcohol still alive, with wood in good evidence together with the lemon components and more savory hints. Good freshness. Vanilla is present, and it is perceived in a marked way.
More savory with time, with a fresh, almost floral return and citrus notes.
George Dickel Hand Selected Barrel 9 Years Tennessee Whisky is overall a whiskey of decent structure, quite fresh but with an interesting, although not very wide aromatic palette. The intense ABV pushes its persistence, but the entrance to the palate suffers, appearing at times untied.
