Mars Maltage Cosmo Wine Cask Finish is a blended malt 2020 release from The Mars Shinsu Distillery. This release features malt whisky from the Japanese Shinshu distillery along with whiskies from undisclosed Scottish distilleries. It was finished in wine casks for a year before bottling.
Winey sensations in a velvety texture. The master distiller has been successful in matching the Japanese silky mouthfeel with a subtle, yet well-defined wine essence, rich in acidic and strawberry components, without indulging too much in the tannins. Tasty, yet not too astringent. Well crafted.
Again, the influence of the wine casks is evident, yet the duration of the finish has been well determined, based on the marriage of the refined texture and the influence of the finish. Maybe in this case the wine components are slightly more prominent than on the nose. The results is a first-fill sherry-like product, with tons of red berries, some rancio and a not too invasive tannin.
Medium duration, again on winey notes, yet some semi-sweet components are taking over, for an easier finish compared to the overall experience.
Mars Maltage Cosmo Wine Cask Finish is a product rather coherent with expectations. The traditional silky texture of Japanese blended malt is well-paired with a correct duration wine cask finish, which is adding important red berries and some acidic components. The finale is enriched with some semi-sweet notes, probably one of the best aspects. Not a true surprise, but also reasonable well crafted.
