Mellow Corn Straight Corn Bottled in Bond is a release from Heaven Hill distillery. It is produced in accordance with a unique set of regulations that define Straight Corn Whiskey. It is distilled from a mash of at least 80 percent corn and aged for four years in a once-used Bourbon barrel. As a Bottled-in-Bond product this whiskey also meets all the strict legal requirements of the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, i.e. it’s the product of a single distiller from a single distillery, uses grains from a single distilling season, is aged a minimum of four years, and is bottled at 100 proof or 50% alcohol by volume.
Fragrant and mellow (not only in the name). Of course there is a major corn sweetness, however the profile is also deeper, with some orange honey and a delicate spiciness reminding of cinnamon. Alcohol seems very well chosen.
Chewy and medium-bodied, with a similar richness added to the sweet character which is evident in the nose. Vanilla and oak are minor, side notes, while the spicy touch is at times easier to perceive.
Medium length, pleasant, again sweet and maybe slightly more mono-dimensional than the other aspects.
Mellow Corn Straight Corn Bottled in Bond is a very nice surprise compared to other 100% corn products; the overall profile is for sure sweet and corn-driven, however many more subtle nuances are enriching the fruition, for an overall very pleasant result. Alcohol is also very centered, enough to push the tastes without overwhelm the drinker.
