Stonewood Smokey Monk is a 2019 release from Steinwälder Hausbrennerei Schraml distillery in Germany. It is said to be aged in "heavy toasted" barrels and only beech trees have been used to smoke the barley.
Interesting, rather complex. There is a minor Sulphur / mineral component, candle match. Some dark fruit, plums, sultanas, dark cherries, bacon and a balsamic components (rhubarb).
Maybe slightly watery. The tastes are coherent with the nose, dark/red fruit with some balsamic and meaty components. A slightly bitter minor hint, the continuation of the balsamic rhubarb nose sensation, like the one of bitter herbs.
Rather short, again maybe due to the low intensity of the sip. Red fruit is just a whisper, and the nice balsamic component fades off quickly.
Stonewood Smokey Monk is not a bad whisky, however the interesting balsamic component at the nose quickly fades into a watery sip and a rather short finish, for a not truly long-lasting experience.
