Lagavulin 12 Years Old (Special Release 2021) is one of the yearly Special Releases by Diageo for 2021. This particular aging statement for the Lagavulin brand, as well as the ex-bourbon casks used for the aging, has been proposed several times, with interesting yet subtle variations year after year, which makes the analysis interesting on 2021's release.
Three different layers are overlapping: fruit (with melon and unripe peach), citrus (mellow and sweet Sorrento lemon) and peat (iodine but fresh). The overall sensation is of good integration and a creamy result.
The entrance is pretty spicy and peppery, with an interesting kick. These tip of the tongue sensations are boosted by a good alcoholic percentage. Peat is still present, and the product does not lose its creamy, buttery quality, with grilled yellow fruit sweetness.
Medium-long, typically peated and iodine, marine. The fruity component is quite thin, just a whisper of lemon in the form of a semi-sweet Sorrento one of good quality.
Lagavulin 12 Years Old (Special Release 2021) is definitely a good whisky, where peat, fruity and iodine fresh citrus components are well integrated together in a creamy, velvety sensation. The registry changes a little in the palate, where the spicy kick is somehow less standardized, making the experience more varied, but also stressing a little the tone of the fruition. At moments looks even younger than its age.
