Karuizawa Distillers Inc., in collaboration with Seibu Holdings and Furano City, has announced plans for a world-class whisky distillery in Hokkaido, set to open in 2028. Known for its natural beauty and tourist attractions, Furano offers an ideal setting for whisky production.
The new Furaliss Distillery, which combines “Furano” with “bliss,” will feature innovative architecture and sustainable practices while providing tours, tastings, and educational programs. Master Blender Ian Chang will oversee production, aiming to create “a symbol of growth, rooted in Furano’s land and spirit.”
Sustainability is a key focus, with plans to recycle byproducts alongside local farmers. Seibu’s tourism network will help draw visitors from across Japan and beyond.
At a press conference at the New Furano Prince Hotel, stakeholders shared their enthusiasm:
Mayor Taketoshi Kita said, “This project will highlight Furano’s natural and culinary resources.”
Koji Shimaoka, CEO of Karuizawa Distillers, added, “We’re honored to craft exceptional whisky and share Furano’s magic with the world.”
Takashi Goto, Chairman & CEO of Seibu Holdings, concluded, “Together, we aim to create a destination that inspires and welcomes all.”
