Caisteal Chamuis is a 2021 release from Mossburn, Distillers and Blenders. This is a classic ‘Island style’ Blended Malt Scotch Whisky crafted from Single Malts distilled on the islands of Scotland, which are then re-casked in first-fill bourbon barrels. There are indications the spirits are coming from Islay and Orkney.
A very interesting mix of different, battling natures: there is a core of dark, dirty, oily maritime hints, which is paired with somehow more gentle, honeyed nature spirit which is lingering in the background, for a very complex, deep, yet well integrated blend. Everything is peated and smoky, but deep and rich, rounded. Smoked butterscotch with dirty, oily complexity is probably the best description, with some oakiness to keep everything together.
Salted caramel, again deep and complex butterscotch, dirty and dark sides. Spices are bolder and upfront, dark and roasted. Nice and full-bodied.
Medium-long, dense and persistent, not truly refined, yet masculine.
Caisteal Chamuis is an excellent price to quality ratio release, where the essence of two different spirits are well integrated thanks to a final finish. The final product is intensely peated, yet mellow, round and reasonably complex, with some nice aromas of deep and dark butterscotch.
