Ardnamurchan Heritage Barley Release is a 2025 release from the west highlands coastal distillery. This release uses 100% unpeated Golden Promise malted barley, distilled in 2018 and matured exclusively in ex-American bourbon barrels.
At first it is very inviting, fresh and golden: candied apples, light toffee, marzipan and sweet citrus notes. White chocolate with golden raisin. In the second nose more subtle, darker notes of burnt sugar, demerara, are developed in the background. The character of the Heritage Barley are perfectly represented.
The sip is fresh and fruity, at times more zesty (lemon and tangerine), yet the typical coastal saline note can be identified better than on the nose. This mineral hint is stimulating salivation and inviting a new sip. In the second palate a chocolate-covered biscuit-like background allows the demerara sugar to be introduced. There are also some drier notes of nuts. Very oily.
Medium-long, high-quality, again on zesty sweet lemon notes with some sophisticated herbal components.
Ardnamurchan Heritage Barley Release is a high quality release, in which the specific characteristic of the Heritage Barley (dark demerara sugar background), already seen and appreciated in a previous Waterford release, can be appreciated. The core is fresh and fruity/zesty, with a touch of the salt hint which the coastal distillery is famous for.
