Kirk & Sweeney Gran Reserva Superior

Kirk & Sweeney takes its name from a wooden schooner notorious for smuggling rum from the Caribbean to the northeastern United States during Prohibition, seized by the Coast Guard in 1924 with its cargo of rum. Produced at the Bermúdez Distillery in Santiago de los Caballeros, the Gran Reserva Superior is the flagship of the relaunched range, a blend of rums aged between 5 and 23 years, with the oldest reserves imparting extraordinary depth and character. Distilled from sugarcane and blackstrap molasses in column stills and aged in American oak barrels.

TASTING NOTES - KIRK & SWEENEY GRAN RESERVA SUPERIOR

Nose

Sweet scents of almonds, honey, caramel and a touch of milk chocolate open the nose, with pecan nuts adding a pleasant roasted depth. After a few moments in the glass, vanilla emerges as well.

Palate

Round and sweet on entry. Dried fruits take centre stage, recalling plums, raisins and a touch of mango, giving the mid-palate a nice depth that lifts the expression above straightforward sweetness. Vanilla, some wood and honey complete the flavor profile.

Finish

Medium length. The fruit is confirmed alongside wood spices and vanilla.

Overall, the Kirk & Sweeney Gran Reserva Superior is an enjoyable and easy to appreciate ron, that offers a well-balanced flavor profile in which the dried fruit aromas are the most interesting and distinctive element. Round, accessible and more layered than the entry-level expressions in the range.
