Founded in 1862, the Santiago de Cuba distillery is the oldest rum factory in the country, where the tradition of Cuban light rum has been preserved. Ron Santiago de Cuba is produced from sugar cane grown in the Oriente province in the south east of the island, a molasses-based rum distilled in column stills and charcoal filtered before being transferred to white oak barrels for ageing. The 11 Year Old is aged on site for 11 years in selected oak barrels. It carries Cuba's Denominación de Origen Protegida designation.
Caramel, oak and roasted scents open the nose, with a rich nuttiness adding depth and warmth. After a few moments in the glass, cocoa nuances emerge, completing the flavor profile.
Round and smooth on entry. Caramel, wood and dark chocolate drive the mid-palate, joined by hints of spices. The nuttiness confirmed on the nose carries through here too.
Medium persistence. Clean and gently sweet, with a touch of wood and wood spices closing things out in a tidy and unfussy way.
Overall, the Ron Santiago de Cuba Extra Añejo 11 Year Old is an easy to appreciate, with a well-balanced and harmonious flavor profile underpinned by a nice sweetness. The structure is decent for the ABV, and the overall impression is of a refined, reliable Cuban rum that rewards unhurried sipping without demanding too much attention.
