Labourdonnais XO is a Mauritian rum from the Distillerie de Labourdonnais, on a sugar-cane estate near Mapou in the north of the island that dates back to 1774. Unusually for Mauritius, where most rum is molasses-based, Labourdonnais ferments and distils pure sugar cane juice in the agricole style. This XO is a blend of column-distilled rums tropically aged for six to nine years in a combination of ex-Cognac and ex-bourbon casks.
On the nose, gooseberry leads into vegetal aromas and balsamic notes, carrying mint and clove. Shades of wood varnish follow, then caramel.
On the palate, the gooseberry carries through, alongside the balsamic and wood-varnish notes. Spiced nuances now appear, with cinnamon and ginger, then citrus zest, over a sweet base.
Medium-long, with ginger, cinnamon and vanilla.
Overall, the Labourdonnais XO has a well-defined aromatic palette with fairly direct aromas. Nose and palate are consistent, with good breadth across the aromatic range and a fair degree of depth.
