1731 Fine & Rare Cuba 5 Year Old

1731 Fine & Rare is an independent bottler based in the Netherlands, founded with the specific aim of sourcing and bottling additive-free rums from single origins across the Caribbean and South America. The collection consists exclusively of rums that proudly boast their natural colour and flavour without relying on additives. The Cuba 5 Year Old is a single origin expression, distilled from molasses in a column still at an undisclosed Cuban distillery, then aged for 5 years in ex-bourbon oak barrels. Like all rums in the 1731 range, no caramel or sugar has been added, and the rum has not been cold-filtered.

TASTING NOTES - 1731 FINE & RARE CUBA 5 YEAR OLD

Nose

Olive brine, vanilla and wood emerge on the nose, enriched by prominent varnish notes. After a few moments in the glass, petrichor and mineral nuances develop, adding an intriguing, earthy depth to the aromatic picture.

Palate

Intense on entry, with a full-bodied attack. Wood and vanilla define the mid-palate, with hints of banana and caramel rounding things out in a pleasant, approachable direction.

Finish

Medium-short. Hints of wood spices linger alongside mineral and vegetal nuances, fading relatively quickly.

Overall, the 1731 Fine & Rare Cuba 5 Year Oldis a rum with good aromatic intensity. The aromas are harmonious, showing more character than the age statement might suggest. The real shortcoming is the finish, which is on the shorter side and leaves the drinker wanting more.
