A1710 is an artisanal Martinique distillery at the Habitation du Simon in Le François, established in 2016 by Yves Assier de Pompignan; the name pairs the family initial with 1710, the year an ancestor first settled on the island. Renaissance is the house's flagship white rhum, a pure sugar cane juice spirit made with a long five-to-six-day fermentation using oenological (wine) yeasts and distilled on a copper still fitted with a small column. Because of these unconventional methods it is labelled a "rhum extraordinaire" rather than under the Martinique AOC.
On the nose, it is fresh, with vegetal and briny scents and a pleasant citrus lift. A nice sugary touch comes through, alongside ripe fruit.
On the palate, sugar cane and vegetal aromas, with some spice, ginger standing out in particular, and a little brine.
Medium finish, with brine and vegetal notes.
Overall, the A1710 Renaissance is rich and complex, with a nice structure. The aromas are uncommon, and the flavour profile is well balanced.
