The Abuelo Centuria is a Rum made in Venezuela, by the Varela Hermanos S.A., a company established in 1908, by Don José Varela Blancoestablished. Nowadays, the third generation directs Varela Hermanos, S.A.. The brand produces 4 rum, and the Centuria is the most prestigious one. This rum was first introduced to commemorate the 100 years of the company (Centuria comes from the Latin “Centum”, which means one hundred). The Abuelo Centuria is made up of a blend rums, that have been age in oak barrels (Jack Daniel’s) for up to 30 years. The system used is the Solera and this means that this rum is not 30 years old, but it contains rums that have been aged that long.
Intense scents of cocoa and ganache are followed by a mix of tropical fruits. Then note of walnut and almond get developed. There is also a vegetal hint in the background. Inviting.
Warm and round. It delivers notes of honey, molasses, dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans. A touch of seasoned wood is perceivable as well.
Medium persistence. Red fruits, a touch of vanilla and mild spices. Then orange marmalade.
Overall, the Abuelo Centuria is a rum equipped with a very balanced flavor profile, that is broad and structured. The rum is warm and round, very easy to appreciate. Refined.
