Planteray (formerly Plantation, renamed by Maison Ferrand and master blender Alexandre Gabriel in 2024) sources this rum from producers in Paraguay as part of its Vintage Series, a collection dedicated to showcasing single-country, single-vintage expressions. Each bottle in the Vintage Series celebrates the terroir and birthplace of the rum, with only a handful of casks chosen to represent the vintage and the unique fermentation or distillation techniques of its origin. Like all Planteray rums, the expression follows the house's signature double-ageing process: first in the hot and humid tropical climate, then in the cellars of Maison Ferrand in France for a cooler-climate maturation, sometimes finished in Cognac casks. This release was aged 8 years in ex-bourbon casks, 2 years in ex-cognac casks (Ferrand Casks), plus 10 months in Arbikie Highland Rye whisky cask
Citrusy scents lead the way, joined by tropical fruit recalling green mango and pineapple. A hint of cardamom rounds off the nose, adding a light spiced lift to the fruit-forward profile.
Round and rich, with fragrant notes of tropical fruit, vanilla and oak, alongside some roasted notes that bring weight to the mid-palate. A little on the dry side, which keeps the sweetness in check.
Medium-long. Pepper, oak and vanilla notes carry the finish, closing on a warm, slightly spiced note.
Overall, the Planteray Paraguay 2014 is a structured and layered rum, offering a nice mix of tropical and oaky notes that create real complexity in the glass. A well-balanced expression that rewards attention, with the fruit and wood elements working in tandem rather than competing.
