Appleton Estate has been crafting rum in the Nassau Valley of Jamaica since 1749, and few releases in its history carry the weight and prestige of the Hearts Collection. Born from a collaboration between Master Blender Joy Spence and noted rum authority Luca Gargano, the series distils an uncompromising philosophy into the bottle: 100% pot still spirit, single vintage, single marque, selected from just a handful of casks and bottled at cask strength without compromise. The 1993 expression, the sixth addition to the collection, was drawn from only 13 barrels and aged for 29 years in the tropical heat of Jamaica before being bottled in 2022. At this latitude, the angel's share takes no prisoners, and what remains after nearly three decades is the concentrated, deeply evolved essence of a great Jamaican rum. Limited to 3,600 bottles.
Generous and layered, opening with dried apricot and caramel before molasses adds a darker, more earthy foundation. A subtle vegetal nuance weaves through, followed by a bright note of freshly cut sugar cane. Vanilla emerges quietly in the mid-ground, followed by nutmeg.
Rich, with dried fruit taking centre stage alongside well-integrated oak and vanilla. Roasted aromas add depth, while a blend of spices, nutmeg and cinnamon in particular, keeps things lively and complex. A balsamic nuance threads through the mid-palate, recalling a faint whisper of menthol that adds an unexpected but compelling freshness.
Long and satisfying, with caramel, oak, and vanilla persisting alongside a faintly resinous, viscous quality. It leans slightly dry towards the close, a sign of the oak's considerable presence after nearly three decades.
